Essential Oils For Anxiety

Essential Oils For Anxiety

If you struggle with anxious feelings and find yourself in a constant state of stress, you're definitely not alone. Anxiety is an awful thing to live with - and it's something I'm personally very familiar with! If, like me, you want to take control by finding ways to alleviate anxiety and promote a sense of peace and tranquility (alongside appropriate medical support if you need it; not instead of), essential oils can be a valuable tool in your self-care arsenal. These aromatic, therapeutic plant extracts have been used for centuries to support emotional well-being. So let's explore how to use essential oils for anxiety, and which ones we should have on hand to reach for when the need arises.

But first, a question:

Do essential oils really work? And how?

The simple answer? Yes! Absolutely. You can read a more in-depth explanation on essential oils here, but the TL;DR version is that there are compounds within essential oils that interact with various systems in our bodies (depending on how we are using them) and can invoke certain responses. Consistency is super helpful here - you'll find the best results if you use your oils regularly. Making your interaction with oils a routine and/or ritual also creates a behavioural connection in your brain, which in turn will strengthen your response each time you use them!

How To Use Essential Oils

There are several ways to use essential oils, which can have different effects on our bodies. You can read more about the different methods here, but here are the three ways essential oils can benefit you:

  • Inhalation (via breathing in)
  • Absorption (internal/emotional benefits from being absorbed through the skin)
  • Topical Application (physical/external benefits from being applied to the skin)

Please note, we do not recommend ingestion of essential oils; this is something that should only be done under the strict guidance and supervision of a qualified aromatherapist.

What Essential Oils Should We Use For Anxiety?

While it really comes down to personal preference, these are the essential oils considered to be the "best" for stress and anxiety. These oils tend to contain compounds that promote calm, relaxation, and grounding - as well as soothing the nervous system, which tends to be in a heightened state of panic when we are battling with anxiety.

Its soothing aroma helps relax both the mind and body, promoting a sense of peace and serenity - as well as helping with sleep, which is vital for both physical and mental health. Uplifting Bergamot is known to uplift the mood and ease anxiety. It can help reduce stress levels, and promote relaxation - supporting you to ease into a state of gentle joy. Mix a few drops of bergamot oil with a carrier oil, such as coconut or jojoba, and massage it onto your temples or chest for an instant pick-me-up. Known as the "King of Oils", Frankincense essential oil has been used for centuries in spiritual and meditative practices. Its woody, earthy, grounding aroma is known to induce a sense of tranquility and can help promote deep, conscious breathing. Its rich floral scent has a calming effect on the mind and can help uplift your mood. Diffuse ylang ylang oil in your bedroom or mix a few drops with a carrier oil and use it for a relaxing massage

Clary sage essential oil is renowned for its calming and balancing properties, making it a valuable tool for managing anxiety and emotional well-being. Diffuse or inhale directly from the bottle for instant relief during moments of anxiety, or dilute with a carrier oil and apply to wrists or behind the ears.

Can I Blend Essential Oils?

Yes, absolutely! For example, lavender, bergamot and frankincense work really well together - which is why we use them in our "Roll On Calm" essential oil rollers.

What Else Do I Need To Know?
